Slesinger Management Services
2008 Annual Report
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to send you this brief report describing my executive search firm’s work in 2008.
8 Searches Completed in 2008
Slesinger Management Services conducts searches for nonprofit organizations, including foundations and associations, primarily in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. The following searches were completed last year:
- International AIDS Vaccine Initiative -- Senior Director, Public Sector Development
- YWCA of the National Capital Area -- Executive Director
- Research!America -- Executive Vice President
- International Youth Foundation -- Vice President for Education
- CNFA -- Senior Vice President for Programs
- IREX -- President and CEO
- George Washington University -- Vice President for External Relations
- Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation -- Director of Financial Planning and Analysis
Since launching the firm in 1999, I have completed 84 searches -- 23 for CEO, and 61 for senior staff such as COO, CFO, and vice president for key functional areas such as programs, communication, membership, and administration. The nonprofits include local, national, and international organizations spanning a range of mission areas, including health, education, youth development, and social services.

Writing and Speaking
To help people advance their career in the nonprofit sector (whether they already work for a nonprofit or want to enter it after a career in business or government), I wrote the book Search: Winning Strategies to Get Your Next Job in the Nonprofit World, which was published in 2004. During the past year, the book continued to be available at Amazon.com as well as at the book's own website at www.MyNonprofitJobSearch.com.
Besides leading searches, I enjoy speaking to groups of people about finding leadership positions at nonprofit organizations. In 2008 I was invited by the U.S. Department of State's Transition Center (for people about to retire from the Foreign Service, but not ready to stop working); the Washington, DC, chapter of the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Institute; the 50+ Employment Expo sponsored by the Jewish Council for the Aging in Montgomery County, Maryland; and WTTG Channel 5 Fox Morning News to talk about search strategies, especially for people in the Washington, DC, metro area who have lost their jobs during the current recession.
With each search, I learn new lessons about how nonprofits attract talented staff and how people find good jobs; I hope to continue to speak and write on these topics in the future.
Invaluable Assistance from Colleagues
My search firm's success in helping nonprofit organizations find talented senior staff is based in large part on the tremendous assistance I receive from scores of nonprofit leaders who help me identify candidates for specific searches, and who recommend my firm to colleagues who are looking for a search consultant for their own organization.
Thank you for your interest in Slesinger Management Services. I hope you have great success in 2009.
Sincerely,
Larry Slesinger
